Episode Seven - 'The Water Flowers of Cerulean City'
A big thanks to Crest
of Empathy for this script!!
[Ash, Brock and Pikachu are walking along a
road. Ash yawns and stretches.]
Ash: It’s a great day to just enjoy the sunshine!
Brock: And while you’re enjoying the sunshine, Gary’s
catching even more Pokémon.
[Ash twitches.]
Brock: But I guess a Pokémon trainer can capture Pokémon
and enjoy the sun.
Pikachu: Pika.
Misty: Hey! Wait a minute!
[The boys turn to see Misty running up to them.]
Misty: Where do you think you’re going?
Ash: Oh, I know where we’re going - to Cerulean City.
[Misty looks panicked]
Misty: Cerulean City? What are you going there for?
Ash: Well, it’s none of your business, but I’m going
for more badges.
Misty: Uh, Ash… you don’t want Pokémon from
there, trust me.
Ash: Why not?
Misty: Because they’re all…
Ash: All what?
Misty: Very scary Ghost Pokémon that look like this!
[She pulls a face, stretching her mouth and
eyes wide and sticking out her tongue.]
Misty: ’Ike ‘onshters!
[Ash, Brock and Pikachu all stare at her. Then
Ash starts to laugh.]
Ash: Nice face, Misty! Come on, Brock. Let’s go, Pikachu.
[They turn away and set off up the road again.]
Misty: Hey – wait – wait a second!
[She leaps out in front, barring their way.]
Misty: What about Vermilion City? It’s right on the water
and there are lots of neat Pokémon, and you can watch the
giant yachts pulling into the harbour - and there’s a little
place way up on the hill where you can sit and watch the sunset
that’s so romantic.
Ash: Uh-huh…
Misty: It’s much nicer than that old Cerulean City, so let’s
get going!
Ash: OK, let’s go.
Misty: Really?
Ash: To Cerulean City.
[Misty does an anime collapse. Ash, Brock and
Pikachu turn around and resume walking.]
Ash: I’ve got to get more trainer badges, Brock. And since
there’s a Gym in Cerulean City…
Brock: Yeah, makes sense to me.
Misty: [to herself] I never wanted to wind up back here…
[Inside a store in Cerulean City at night time,
a grate on the wall is unscrewed and
lifted away. On the other side is Team Rocket. James is holding
a screwdriver.]
James: The coast is clear.
Jessie: Nothing to fear.
Meowth: Nobody here!
[They spring down and begin to creep through
the store. James plays a torch over
the various machinery, finally coming to rest on a large vacuum
and hose.]
James: Well, looks like we found it.
Jessie: Just what we need to get just what we want.
Meowth: Pokémon!
[The next day, Ash, Brock and Pikachu have
arrived in Cerulean City.]
Ash: So this is Cerulean City, eh, Brock?
Brock: Pretty nice place, isn’t it?
Ash: Yeah, pretty cool.
[He looks behind them, at the empty road.]
Ash: Hey, look – that’s weird. Misty’s not following
us anymore.
Pikachu: [sadly] Chu…
Brock: She really didn’t want to come to Cerulean City,
did she?
Ash: I wonder why she hates this place so much?
Brock: Hmmm.
Ash: Ah, we’ll never figure out girls!
[They hear sirens]
Ash: The police! I wonder what happened?
Brock: Yeah!
[They run over. A large crowd is standing around
outside a shop]
Ash: [to a man nearby] Excuse me - do you know what happened
here?
Man: Some burglars broke into that store last night.
Ash: Burglars, huh?
Jenny: What do you know about burglars?
[Ash and Brock look up to see Officer Jenny
glaring at them]
Jenny: You two look very suspicious to me.
Ash: Hey, you’re that motorcycle officer from Viridian!
[Jenny looks surprised]
Jenny: Huh? Oh, you must have met my sister-in-law! If you know
my sister-in-law, then you probably had some dealings with the police
in Viridian.
Ash: Well – I –
Jenny: Now, maybe you just stopped to ask her for directions.
Or maybe you found a wallet on the street and turned it in to her.
Or maybe you’re a burglar who broke out of jail!
[As she says the last part, she holds out her
handcuffs threateningly]
Ash: I’ve never been to jail!
Brock: Neither have I, ma’am!
Jenny: That’s what they all say.
Brock: We just got into town and saw the crowd, so we came over
to see what was going on!
Jenny: The criminal always returns to the scene of the crime.
Brock: We’re not –
Ash: [holding out Pokédex] Maybe this’ll
help clear things up?
Dexter: I’m Dexter, a Pokédex programme by Professor
Oak for Pokémon trainer Ash Ketchum.
Brock: [holding out gym badge] Yeah, and I was the leader
of the Pewter City gym.
Jenny: Well, that’s evidence enough for me. I’m sorry
I was suspicious! Now I’m suspicious of my sister-in-law…
she sure has weird taste in friends.
Brock: Um, miss? I was wondering, since I’m new in town,
maybe we could get together tonight and you could show me around?
Jenny: Well, I’m not going to be off-duty ‘til past
your bedtime –
[Brock’s face falls; Ash laughs]
Jenny: - and I may even have to work ‘round the clock to
catch these burglars.
Ash: Well, what exactly did they steal?
Jenny: That’s the strange thing about it – they didn’t
take any money, just a massive vacuum and a giant hose.
Ash: But what would anybody want that stuff for?
Jenny: I’m sure I don’t know, young man, but what
I do know is that I don’t have time to play guessing-games
with you, because I have a job to do and it’s time for you
two to move along. Come on, let’s go.
[She pushes Ash and Brock along, then turns
to the crowd]
Jenny: Alright, everybody, the show’s over, nothing to see
here, break it up, break it up –
[After escaping from Officer Jenny, Ash and
Brock are sitting on a park bench.]
Ash: Good thing I had Dexter and you had your badge.
Brock: Yeah. Shouldn’t you head for Cerulean City gym?
Ash: Yeah. Hey, Brock – you got any inside info on the gym-trainer
there?
[Brock looks surprised; Ash laughs]
Ash: I just want to find out as much as I can about him before
we have our match. “Know yourself, know your adversary, and
you hold the key to victory”.
Brock: You sure know some pretty deep stuff.
Ash: I learned that one from Dexter.
Brock: Well, I’ve never actually met the trainer here, but
I do know his Pokémon’s special move.
Ash: Yeah? What is it?
Brock: I’m sorry, Ash, but I can’t give you that information.
Ash: Why not?
Brock: I’m a gym-trainer too, after all. I can’t tell
you out of respect – you understand.
Ash: That’s cool.
Brock: Well, I have some stuff I need to check out.
Ash: What stuff?
Brock: Just… stuff. See you later.
[Brock walks off. Ash waves.]
Ash: Bye.
[Ash turns to Pikachu.]
Ash: Well, let’s get going, Pikachu.
Pikachu: Ka.
[Ash and Pikachu walk along the road, Ash peering
at a map.]
Ash: Cerulean City gym… Cerulean City gym… Should
be right around here someplace.
[He spots the gym. It is a large, circular
building with a picture of a Seel above the door.]
Ash: There it is!
[Ash and Pikachu enter the gym (did they even
pay?) and find themselves inside a large
stadium with a swimming pool in the middle. The seats are lined
with spectators,
mostly men. The voice of an announcer booms over the loudspeakers.]
Announcer: Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the stars of our
show – the Sensational Cerulean City Synchronised Swimming
Sisters!
Ash: Huh?
[The Sensational Sisters – Daisy, Lily
and Violet – appear on the diving board above
the pool. The men in the audience start to cheer and holler. The
girls wave to the
crowd, then dive into the pool. They go into a synchronised swimming
routine.]
Ash: I thought this was the Pokémon gym, Pikachu!
Pikachu: Ka!
[Pikachu isn’t listening; it is watching
the sisters, sparkly-eyed,
just like all the other guys in the room.]
Pikachu: Cha!
[The sisters finish their performance, to much
cheering. Ash, however, is just confused.]

[Later on, Ash and Pikachu wander through the halls of the building.]
Ash: I can’t understand it!
[They turn a corner and see that the walls
of the corridor they’re in are
made of glass. Behind them, fish swim in large tanks of water.]
Ash: Huh? It’s like an aquarium! How can this be a Pokémon
gym?
[Suddenly, they hear voices. The three sisters
appear at
the other end of the corridor, talking to each other.]
Lily: The crowd was totally awesome!
Daisy: I know, that was so great.
Violet: Daisy, the dive you did was super!
Daisy: The practice really paid off.
Lily: Totally!
[They laugh. Ash runs up to them.]
Ash: Uh – excuse me –
Lily: I’m sorry, but if you want an interview, you’ll
have to, like, call our manager.
Ash: No – it’s not that –
Lily: We don’t do autographs.
Ash: I don’t want one. I really just wanted to know if this
is a Pokémon gym.
Daisy: It sure is.
Ash: Well, I’m looking for the gym-trainer.
Violet: You’re looking at them.
Ash: Huh?
[A sparkly pink background appears. The sisters appear on
it, one by one.]
Daisy: The three of us are the gym-trainer here.
Lily: We’re the Sensational Sisters.
Violet: We’re world-famous.
Ash: Huh? But what’s with all that swimming?
Lily: It’s, like, our hobby, and our fans love to watch
us perform.
Violet: We pool our talents to make a big splash!
[The sister laugh uproariously. Ash and Pikachu
groan.]

[Ash, Pikachu and the sisters are now back in the stadium,
besides the swimming pool. The stands are empty.]
Ash: Come on! I challenge all of you!
[The sisters look away, embarrassed.]
Ash: Huh? What -?
Daisy: We… don’t feel much like battling anymore.
Ash: What do you mean?
Violet: We just got beaten three times in a row by kids from this
nowhere place called Pallet Town.
[Ash’s face falls.]
Ash: Not again…
Violet: It was just one defeat after another. My eyes were spinning
from all the losses.
Daisy: We had to, like, practically rush all our Pokémon
to the Pokémon Centre.
Lily: This is the only one left.
[She drops a Poké-ball, and a Goldeen
comes out.]
Goldeen: Goldeen. Goldeen goldeen goldeen. [Etc.]
Ash: You mean all you have is a Goldeen?
Violet: If it would evolve into Seaking, we could use it, but
all it can do now is its Horn Attack.
Daisy: So, like, there’s no point in battling.
Lily: Now, instead of having matches, we have time to make ourselves
look more beautiful than ever!
[Ash looks shocked at this attitude. Daisy
smiles at him.]
Daisy: I know what you want.
[She claps her hands several times.]
Daisy: Seel!
[A Seel swims across the pool and hops out
the other side to stand next to
Daisy. It sticks out its tongue, which has a badge on it in the
shape
of a teardrop. Daisy picks up the badge and holds it out to Ash.]
Daisy: A Cascade badge. This is what you want, right? You can
have it.
Ash: Thanks… I’d rather earn my badges…
Daisy: Take it! A badge is a badge.
[Ash wavers for a few more moments. Then, with
a sigh, he walks over to Daisy
and slowly holds out his hand. Daisy moves to give him the badge.]
Daisy: Here.
Misty: Hold it right there!
[Ash and the sisters turn around to see Misty
standing on the benches, hands on hips.]
Ash: Misty?
Pikachu: [happily] Cha!

Who's That Pokémon?! It's
Seel!

[Misty leaps down from the benches with a cry of “Hyyyyyy-ahh!]
Misty: All right, Daisy, if you don’t want to battle him,
I will!
Ash: What do you mean?
Misty: I’m a Cerulean City trainer too.
[Ash and Pikachu react with shock.]
Misty: I’m the fourth Sensational Sister!
Lily: There are only three Sensational Sisters – and one
runt.
Misty: Grrrrrrrrr!
Daisy: So, little sister, it’s a surprise to see you back
so soon.
Violet: That little girl with the big mouth who said she wouldn’t
come back ‘til she was a great Pokémon trainer –
wasn’t that you?
Misty: Er… I guess I did say something like that when I
left…
Ash: So that’s why Misty was so dead-set against coming
here!
Pikachu: Pika.
Lily: Misty, you left here pretending you wanted to become a Pokémon
trainer because you couldn’t compare with us. Because we’re
obviously much more talented and beautiful than you are!
Ash: Uh-oh.
Misty: That wasn’t the reason!
Daisy: Well then, I guess, like, you came back because you couldn’t
make it as a Pokémon trainer.
Misty: It wasn’t my idea to come back here! The only reason
I’m here is because he wanted to come!
Daisy: Well, he’s totally not someone I’d choose for
a boyfriend – but you’re no prize yourself!
[Ash falls over backwards, anime style.]
Misty: My boyfriend? If I battle him, that’ll prove I’m
not a quitter and I’m just as good a trainer as you three!
Daisy: Well, you are the only one of us with a Pokémon
that can actually battle…
Misty: All right, Ash – are you ready to rumble?
[Ash laughs nervously.]

[Ash and Misty stand on platforms at opposite ends of the
pool. Between them, a few floats bob on the water.]
Misty: I wasn’t planning on challenging you ‘til you
paid me back for my bike, but this is as good a time as any. If
you want that Cascade badge, you’re going to have to beat
me!
Ash: It’ll be my pleasure! [To Pikachu] Pikachu,
this one’s gonna be a piece of cake.
Pikachu: [uneasily] Cha…
Ash: [to Misty] So, how many Pokémon?
Misty: Two against two works for me.
Ash: You got it. All right then, Pikachu, I choose you!
[He picks up Pikachu and tries to throw it
like a Poké-ball. However, Pikachu clings to his hand.]
Ash: Huh?
Pikachu: Chu – chu –
Ash: Pikachu, what are you doing?
[Pikachu hops down from Ash’s hand, then points at Misty
and shakes its head.]
Pikachu: Chu, chu…
Ash: Oh, what – are you saying you don’t want to battle
with Misty?
Pikachu: [nodding] Ka-chu.
Ash: Well… I guess it’s OK if you don’t want
to battle a friend.
Misty: [waving] Pikachu! You’re a pika-pal!
[Pikachu perks up, smiling.]
Pikachu: Ka-chu!
Ash: [scowling] Thanks a lot, Pikachu. Butterfree! I
choose you!
[He calls out Butterfree.]
Butterfree: Freee! Freeeeeee!
Misty: Well, in that case… Misty calls Staryu!
[She sends out Staryu]
Staryu: Hyah!
Ash: Hmmm…
[Ash holds out the Pokédex.]
Dexter: Staryu. The core of this water Pokémon shines in
a rainbow of seven colours - a core that is valued by some as a
type of jewellery.
Ash: Oh. Wow. Leave it to a girl to show off her jewellery.
Misty: [waving her arms in the air] Quit stalling and
let’s get this show on the road!
Violet: Do you think Misty could really win?
Lily: Like, in her dreams, maybe.
Seel: [clapping] Seel, seel.
Ash: Butterfree, you can blow that thing away with one blast!
Tackle it!
[Butterfree tackles Staryu and knocks it over]
Misty: Staryu, counter-attack!
[Staryu leaps up into the air, spinning]
Ash: Butterfree, dodge!
[Butterfree flies higher, and Staryu misses. It lands on one of
the floats, and has to
hop along on one point to keep its balance. Butterfree then tackles
Staryu twice.]
Ash: Ha-ha! I’m gonna win this!
Misty: Staryu, water gun!
[Staryu dives into the water and water guns
Butterfree. It then hops onto the float
again and fires several more shots, which Butterfree just manages
to dodge.]
Ash: In that case, stun-spore, now!
[Butterfree flies over Staryu and releases
stun-spore. The shimmering
gold powder covers Staryu, who starts to twitch.]
Misty: Oh no! Staryu looks like it’s in real pain!
Ash: It doesn’t even have a face! How can you tell?
Misty: Because I’m sensitive to others’ feelings,
that’s how!
Ash: Oh yeah, like I’m not?
Seel: [clapping] Seel, seel.
Violet: Which side are you clapping for?
Misty: Staryu, wash it off!
[Staryu falls forward into the water. It drifts
down, then leaps back
out and stands on the float, flexing two of its points like arms.]
Misty: Yay! Too bad you didn’t know that stun-spore doesn’t
work if you wash it off in water!
Ash: She thinks she knows everything. Butterfree, sleep-powder!
[Butterfree releases sleep-powder; Staryu dives
under to avoid it.]
Misty: Tackle it from underwater!
[Staryu leaps up and slams into Butterfree.
It leaps again and again, hopping from
one end of the pool to the other, with Butterfree barely dodging
each time.]
Misty: If Staryu can get Butterfree underwater, I win! Water-Pokémon
always have the edge in the water!
[Misty laughs maniacally while a wave of water
rears up
behind her. Ash growls, while Pikachu just smiles.]
Pikachu: Ka-chu.
Ash: Pikachu, you’re supposed to be on my side!
Pikachu: [ears drooping] Ka-chu…
[The Sensational Sisters now looks impressed.]
Daisy: Misty’s totally awesome.
Lily: Well, we three got the good looks in the family, so I guess
she had to get some talent.
[One of Staryu’s tackles connects; Butterfree
lands in the water, where it struggles.]
Ash: Butterfree, return!
[Ash returns Butterfree]
Ash: Pidgeotto, I choose you!
[He sends out Pidgeotto]
Misty: Oh yeah? Staryu, return!
[She recalls Staryu]
Misty: Misty calls Starmie!
[She sends out Starmie]
Starmie: Huhhh.
Ash: Pidgeotto, whirlwind it away!
[Pidgeotto uses whirlwind, but Starmie clings
to its float.]
Misty: Dive under, then up!
[Starmie jumps into the water, then leaps up
and hits Pidgeotto.]
Ash: Strike back with wing-attack!
[Starmie curls around in the air like a Frisbee.
Pidgeotto hits it with a wing, sending it crashing
into the water. Immediately, Starmie leaps back out and hits Pidgeotto
again.]
Ash: Give it a gust to blow it away!
[Pidgeotto uses gust. Starmie is blown into
a wall. It slides down,
slumped, the jewel in its centre flashing on and off.]
Misty: Starmie! Oh no, Starmie’s energy is just about to
run out!
Ash: Alright, Pidgeotto, let’s get that trainer badge!
[Suddenly, a loud rumbling is heard and the
room begins to shake. The Sensational
Sisters scream. One of the walls crumbles and smashes apart. A giant
platform
with a large vacuum and hose on it wheels through the hole.]
Violet: Check out that hair!
Daisy: Like, who invited the party-crashers?
[Team Rocket slowly come into view.]
Jessie: Sorry to break in on you, ladies!
James: Allow us to introduce ourselves.
Jessie: To protect the world from devastation!
James: To unite all peoples within our nation!
Jessie: To denounce the evils of truth and love!
James: To extend our reach to the stars above!
Jessie: Jessie!
James: James!
[A background of a rock with the Team Rocket
‘R’ on it, surrounded
by waves, appears. Jessie and James stand in front.]
Jessie: Team Rocket, blast off at the speed of light!
James: Surrender now or prepare to fight!
[The background fades away. Meowth jumps down
in front of Jessie and James.]
Meowth: Meowth! Dat’s right!
James: The water-Pokémon have the advantage.
Jessie: But if we steal that water away -
James: - The Pokémon are ours for the taking!
Meowth: [pulling a lever] And Meowth knows just how ta
do it!
Daisy: What are they trying to prove?
[The machine starts up, and the Sisters scream.
The hose lowers
into the pool, and all of the water begins to be sucked up.]
Ash: A massive vacuum and a giant hose… Team Rocket were
the robbers who broke into that store back there! I should have
known it was them!
Daisy: Our swimming pool!
Misty: They’re soaking [note: I think this should have
been ‘sucking’] it dry!
Lily: That’s our water!
Meowth: Right! I should give it back.
[Meowth pushes the lever into reverse. The
hose raises up and pours
water at Ash and co., washing them in all different directions.]
Misty: You’ve got to protect the Pokémon!
Violet: Like, what about my hair?
Meowth: All right, now’s da time ta suck ‘em up!
[He puts the hose back into ‘suck’
mode. It goes back in the pool and begins to suck
up the water again. Seel is still in the pool, and is dragged towards
the hose.]
Seel: Seeeeel!
Violet: Come back, Seel!
Ash: Oh, Pikachu!
[A small wave sweeps Pikachu into the pool.]
Pikachu: Chaaa!
Ash: Pikachu!
Pikachu: Pika!
Ash: Hey, wait a second – water conducts electricity! Pikachu,
Thunderbolt!
Pikachu: Ka-chu!
[Pikachu uses thunderbolt. The electricity
travels up the hose and
onto the platform, where it zaps Team Rocket. They scream.]
James: It’s times like these that make me wanna go straight.
[They fall into the water.]
James: Now I know how it feels to be all washed up.
Jessie: We’ll never come clean!
[They are sucked into the hose and squirted
out the back, where they
fly into the air. Seel stands by the hole in the wall and claps.]
Team Rocket: Looks like Team Rocket’s blasting off again!
[Pikachu is still being sucked into the hose.]
Pikachu: Chaaaa!
Daisy: Oh no!
Misty: Pikachu!
[Ash starts running towards the machine as
Pikachu is
pulled underwater. He climbs up onto the platform.]
Ash: Pikachu!
[He leaps forward and pulls the lever. The
hose reverses and
squirts Pikachu out again, right into Daisy’s arms.]

[Ash, Misty, Pikachu and the sisters stand by the pool.]
Misty: Hey, we never got to finish our match.
Ash: Yeah, and I was just about to win it, too.
Misty: What?
Violet: You could say your match had to be postponed, like, due
to drain?
Lily: At least nobody lost.
Misty: I wanted to win!
Ash: I guess I’m not gonna get that Cascade badge.
Daisy: Wrong. We’re giving this badge to you.
[She holds out the badge.]
Ash: Huh?
Misty: How come he gets the badge? He didn’t win!
Daisy: Pikachu was the one that, like, totally saved us all. And
if he’d used Pikachu from the start, there was no way your
water-Pokémon could have won.
Misty: Aw, man!
Daisy: Take the badge, Ash – you deserve it.
Ash: Gee, thanks!
[He takes the badge.]
Ash: Hah, I’ll take it!
Pikachu: Cha!

[Ash, Misty and Pikachu are saying goodbye to the Sisters outside
the gym.]
Narrator: And so Ash earns his second Pokémon trainer badge.
Lily: Misty, you just go right on trying to be a Pokémon
trainer. You might as well be good at something, ‘cause you’ll
never be stars like us!
Misty: You keep that up and you’ll be seeing stars!
Violet: Chill out!
Daisy: Misty, be careful. You know we love you.
Misty: Yeah.
[Brock runs up.]
Brock: Ash! Hey, man!
Ash: Yo, Brocko!
Brock: How’d it go?
Ash: [holding out badge] See for yourself!
Brock: Cool, let’s go!
Ash: Right.
[They start walking.]
Misty: [running after them] You’re not leaving
without me!
Ash: Misty, you’re not going to be a sore loser, are you?
Misty: I didn’t lose anything, it was a draw!
Ash: Well, I’m the one who got the badge.
Misty: What? You know you lost with Butterfree!
Ash: That was just round one, I made a great comeback!
Misty: If Team Rocket hadn’t busted in, I would have destroyed
you!
Ash: You’re lucky they showed up, you were just about to
lose!
Misty: Lose? I was just getting started!
Ash: Oh yeah?
Misty: Oh yeah!
Brock: Oh brother.
