Abra - from 'Abra Kadabra', a magical incantation, as Abra is a Psychic Pokemon.

Aerodactyl: from 'AERO' meaning 'flying' and 'DACTYL' meaning 'finger'.

Aipom - from 'APE' and 'PALM', as Aipom has a palm at the end of it's tail.

Alakazam - Another familiar magic word, like Abra Kadabra.

Ampharos - Possibly from 'AMPERE', a measurement of electrical current, and 'PHARAOH', the ancient Egyptian word for 'KING'.

Arbok -  'COBRA' with the 'C' replaced with a 'K' and spelt backwards.

Arcanine - from 'ARCANE' meaning 'obscure' and 'CANINE' meaning 'dog'.

Ariados - named after 'ARIADNE' from the Greek legend of the Minotaur.  She gave Theseus a ball of thread so he wouldn't get lost in the labyrinth. 'DOS' is Spanish for 'two', as 'Aridos' is the second evolution of this Pokemon.

Articuno - from 'ARTIC' (as it is the Titian of Ice) and 'UNO', Spanish for 'one'.

Espeon - 'ESP' from 'Extra Sensory Perception', as it is a Psychic Pokemon. 'EON' is the suffix used for all of Evee's evolutions, meaning 'object'.

Exeggcute - 'EGG' as it looks like an egg, and 'EXECUTE' meaning to carry out a task or possibly to put to death (although this is not likely).  Also 'CUTE' maybe because it is a cute Pokemon.

Exeggutor - 'EGG' as it's heads look like an egg, and EXECUTOR, someone who carries out a task.

Farfetch'd - from 'FAR-FETCHED meaning hard to believe.

Fearow - 'FEAR' as it is a Pokemon to be feared (because of it's bad attitude), and 'ROW', from 'SPARROW', a common bird.

Feraligatr - 'FERAL' which means wild, and 'LIGATR' from 'ALLIGATOR'.

Flaaffy - the 'U' in 'FLUFFY' replaced by the double 'A' from 'BAA' (the sound a sheep makes).

Flareon - 'FLARE' as it's a Fire-type. 'EON' is the suffix used for all of Evee's evolutions, meaning 'object'.

Forretress - a combination of 'FORTRESS' and 'TURRET'.

Furret - a combination of 'FURRY' and 'FERRET', the rodent it's based upon.

Gastly - 'GAS' as it's a Gas Pokemon, and from 'GHASTLY' meaning 'horrifying'.

Gengar - Unsure origin.  Perhaps derived from 'GANGRENE', a disease, 'ANGER', or possibly 'GENGHOOLIE' which means 'frightening'.

Geodude - a combination of 'GEODE', a rock with crystal formations inside, and 'DUDE'.

Girafarig - GIRAFFE, made into a palindrome (a word or phrase spelt the same forwards as backwards).

Gligar - 'GLI' from GLIDE, and 'GAR' possibly related to 'Gengar'.

Gloom - 'GLOOM' means 'melancholy'.

Golbat - 'GOL' possibly from 'GOLD', and 'BAT' from the animal the Pokemon is based upon.

Goldeen - from 'GOLD' and a variation of 'INE', a feminine ending, as it's a feminine looking Pokemon.

Golduck - a combination of 'GOLD' and 'DUCK'.

Golem - a 'GOLEM' was a Jewish mythological creature, in essence the first A.I.

Granbull - 'GRAN'  from 'GRAND' and 'BULL' as it is similar to the bulldog.

Graveler - from 'GRAVEL'.

Grimer - from 'GRIME', as Grimers usually live in sewers.

Growlithe - a combination of 'GROWL', as it's a dog-type, and 'LITHE', possibly meaning 'muscular'.

Gyarados - Unknown origin. Possibly related to 'gyre', a word created by Lewis Carroll in his poem 'Jabberwocky', which means to thrash, as Gyarados does.

Haunter - called so as it haunts.

Heracross - 'HERA' from 'HERACLES' (or Hercules) of Greek legend, and 'CROSS' because of the shape of it's horn.

Hitmonchan - 'HIT' as it hits it's opponent with it's powerful attacks, 'MON' from 'MONSTER', and 'CHAN' after Jackie Chan, a famous Chinese martial artist known for his powerful fists.

Hitmonlee - 'HIT' as it hits it's opponent with it's powerful attacks, 'MON' from 'MONSTER', and 'LEE' after Bruce Lee, the most famous martial artist in history.

Hitmontop - 'HIT' as it hits it's opponent with it's powerful attacks, 'MON' from 'MONSTER', and 'TOP' as it spins like a top.

Ho-oh - Unknown origin.

Hoothoot - named after the hooting sound owls make.

Hoppip - 'HOP', from the first step in the triple jump (followed by 'SKIP' and 'JUMP'), and 'PIP' meaning 'seed', the first stage of the life cycle of a plant (followed by 'BLOOM' and 'FLUFF') as Hoppip is the first evoluion.

Horsea - reversal and abrievation of the two words that make 'SEAHORSE', as the Horsea is based upon the Seahorse.

Houndoom - combination of 'HOUND', as it is a dog-type, and 'DOOM'.

Houndour - combination of 'HOUND', as it is a dog-type, and 'DOUR', which means 'somber'.

Hypno - an abrivation of 'HYPNOSIS', one of it's attacks.

Mew - a variation of 'MEOW', the sound a cat makes.

Mewtwo - a combination of 'MEW', a variation of 'MEOW', the sound a cat makes, and 'TWO', which indiactes the fact that it was cloned from a Mew, one of the most powerful Pokemon.

Mr. Mime - so named as many of it's attacks are based upon the tricks mimes perform.  In the 'Pokemon' RPG, Mr. Mime has the nickname Marcel, named after Marcel Marceau, a world famous mime.

Wigglytuff - a combination of 'WIGGLY', as it wiggles a lot, and 'TUFF', from 'TUFT' referring to the patch of hair on it's head.  'TUFF' may also relate to 'TOUGH', as it is quite a tough Pokemon.

Wobbuffet - a combination of 'WOBBLE' and 'BUFFET', meaning to strike repeatedly.
