Abra - from 'Abra Kadabra', a magical incantation, as Abra is a Psychic Pokemon. Aerodactyl: from 'AERO' meaning 'flying' and 'DACTYL' meaning 'finger'. Aipom - from 'APE' and 'PALM', as Aipom has a palm at the end of it's tail. Alakazam - Another familiar magic word, like Abra Kadabra. Ampharos - Possibly from 'AMPERE', a measurement of electrical current, and 'PHARAOH', the ancient Egyptian word for 'KING'. Arbok - 'COBRA' with the 'C' replaced with a 'K' and spelt backwards. Arcanine - from 'ARCANE' meaning 'obscure' and 'CANINE' meaning 'dog'. Ariados - named after 'ARIADNE' from the Greek legend of the Minotaur. She gave Theseus a ball of thread so he wouldn't get lost in the labyrinth. 'DOS' is Spanish for 'two', as 'Aridos' is the second evolution of this Pokemon. Delibird - as it is a delivery bird. Dewgong - from 'DUGONG', an animal which is similar to Dewgong. Diglett - 'DIG', as it digs, and 'LET' as it is small. Ditto - meaning 'to duplicate'. Dodrio - 'DOD' from 'DODO', an extinct bird, and 'TRIO' as it has three heads. Doduo - 'DOD' from 'DODO', an extinct bird, and 'DUO' as it has two heads. Donphan - 'DON' from 'MASTODON', a prehistoric elephant, and 'PHAN' from 'ELEPHANT'. 'EON' is the suffix used for all of Evee's evolutions, meaning 'object'. Exeggcute - 'EGG' as it looks like an egg, and 'EXECUTE' meaning to carry out a task or possibly to put to death (although this is not likely). Also 'CUTE' maybe because it is a cute Pokemon. Exeggutor - 'EGG' as it's heads look like an egg, and EXECUTOR, someone who carries out a task.
Farfetch'd - from 'FAR-FETCHED meaning hard to believe. Fearow - 'FEAR' as it is a Pokemon to be feared (because of it's bad attitude), and 'ROW', from 'SPARROW', a common bird. Feraligatr - 'FERAL' which means wild, and 'LIGATR' from 'ALLIGATOR'. Flaaffy - the 'U' in 'FLUFFY' replaced by the double 'A' from 'BAA' (the sound a sheep makes). Flareon - 'FLARE' as it's a Fire-type. 'EON' is the suffix used for all of Evee's evolutions, meaning 'object'. Forretress - a combination of 'FORTRESS' and 'TURRET'. Furret - a combination of 'FURRY' and 'FERRET', the rodent it's based upon.
Gastly - 'GAS' as it's a Gas Pokemon, and from 'GHASTLY' meaning 'horrifying'. Gengar - Unsure origin. Perhaps derived from 'GANGRENE', a disease, 'ANGER', or possibly 'GENGHOOLIE' which means 'frightening'. Geodude - a combination of 'GEODE', a rock with crystal formations inside, and 'DUDE'. Girafarig - GIRAFFE, made into a palindrome (a word or phrase spelt the same forwards as backwards). Gligar - 'GLI' from GLIDE, and 'GAR' possibly related to 'Gengar'. Gloom - 'GLOOM' means 'melancholy'. Golbat - 'GOL' possibly from 'GOLD', and 'BAT' from the animal the Pokemon is based upon. Goldeen - from 'GOLD' and a variation of 'INE', a feminine ending, as it's a feminine looking Pokemon. Golduck - a combination of 'GOLD' and 'DUCK'. Golem - a 'GOLEM' was a Jewish mythological creature, in essence the first A.I. Granbull - 'GRAN' from 'GRAND' and 'BULL' as it is similar to the bulldog. Graveler - from 'GRAVEL'. Grimer - from 'GRIME', as Grimers usually live in sewers. Growlithe - a combination of 'GROWL', as it's a dog-type, and 'LITHE', possibly meaning 'muscular'. Gyarados - Unknown origin. Possibly related to 'gyre', a word created by Lewis Carroll in his poem 'Jabberwocky', which means to thrash, as Gyarados does.
Haunter - called so as it haunts. Heracross - 'HERA' from 'HERACLES' (or Hercules) of Greek legend, and 'CROSS' because of the shape of it's horn. Hitmonchan - 'HIT' as it hits it's opponent with it's powerful attacks, 'MON' from 'MONSTER', and 'CHAN' after Jackie Chan, a famous Chinese martial artist known for his powerful fists. Hitmonlee - 'HIT' as it hits it's opponent with it's powerful attacks, 'MON' from 'MONSTER', and 'LEE' after Bruce Lee, the most famous martial artist in history. Hitmontop - 'HIT' as it hits it's opponent with it's powerful attacks, 'MON' from 'MONSTER', and 'TOP' as it spins like a top. Ho-oh - Unknown origin. Hoothoot - named after the hooting sound owls make. Hoppip - 'HOP', from the first step in the triple jump (followed by 'SKIP' and 'JUMP'), and 'PIP' meaning 'seed', the first stage of the life cycle of a plant (followed by 'BLOOM' and 'FLUFF') as Hoppip is the first evoluion. Horsea - reversal and abrievation of the two words that make 'SEAHORSE', as the Horsea is based upon the Seahorse. Houndoom - combination of 'HOUND', as it is a dog-type, and 'DOOM'. Houndour - combination of 'HOUND', as it is a dog-type, and 'DOUR', which means 'somber'. Hypno - an abrivation of 'HYPNOSIS', one of it's attacks.
Igglybuff - 'IGGLY' from 'JIGGLY' without the 'J', to indicate that it's Jigglypuff's pre-evolutionary form, and 'BUFF' meaning 'tough'. Ivysaur - combination of 'IVY', a plant, and 'SAUR', as it looks like a Dinosaur.

Ledian - a varitaion of LEDYBA, to denote that it is an evolved form. Ledyba - a variation of LADYBUG. Likitung - a combination and respelling of 'LICK' and 'TONGUE'. Lugia - Origin unknown.

Machoke - a combination of 'MA', the suffix used for all stages of this Pokemon to denote 'MACHO', and 'CHOKE'. Machop - a combination of 'MA', the suffix used for all stages of this Pokemon to denote 'MACHO', and 'CHOP'. Magby - 'MAG' to denote 'MAGMA', and 'BY' to denote 'BABY', as it's the first evolution. Magcargo - 'MAG' to denote 'MAGMA', and 'CARGO' to denote 'ESCARGOT'. Magikarp - a combination of 'MAGIC' and 'CARP'. Magmar - from 'MAGMA' (molten rock), with an added 'R'. Magnemite - a combination of 'MAGNET' and 'MITE', meaning tiny. Magneton - a combination of 'MAGNET' and 'TON', an object. Mankey - a combination of the words 'MAN' and 'MONKEY'. May also come from 'MANKEY', which means 'dirty'. Mantine - derived from 'MANTA'. Mareep - a combination of 'MAR', from 'MARY' of the nursery rhyeme, and 'EEP' from 'SHEEP'. Marowak - 'MARO' from 'MARROW', the soft substance within bones, and 'WAK', shortened from 'WHACK'. Possibly also comes from 'AROWAK', a Caribbean Indian tribe. Marill - 'MAR' from 'MARINE', to indicate that's it's a water-type, and 'RILL', a ripple on a pond. Meganium - a variation of 'GERANIUM', a flower. Meowth a combination of 'MEOW', the sound a cat makes, and 'TH' the last two letters of 'MOUTH'. Metapod - a combination of 'META', from 'METAMORPHOSIS', and 'POD'. Mew - a variation of 'MEOW', the sound a cat makes. Mewtwo - a combination of 'MEW', a variation of 'MEOW', the sound a cat makes, and 'TWO', which indiactes the fact that it was cloned from a Mew, one of the most powerful Pokemon. Mr. Mime - so named as many of it's attacks are based upon the tricks mimes perform. In the 'Pokemon' RPG, Mr. Mime has the nickname Marcel, named after Marcel Marceau, a world famous mime. Miltank - a combination of 'MILK' and 'TANK'. Misdreavus - a respelling of 'MISCHIEVOUS'. Moltres - a combination of 'MOLT', from 'MOLTEN', as it's a fire-type, and 'TRES', Spanish for 'three', as it's the third legendary bird. Muk - a respelling of 'MUCK'. Murkrow - a combination of 'MURK', as it is a dark-type, and 'CROW'.

Pidgeot - 'PIDG' to represent 'Pigeon', the bird the Pokemon is based upon, and 'EOT' to represent that it is the highest evolution. Pidgeotto - 'PIDG' to represent 'Pigeon', the bird the Pokemon is based upon, and 'EOTTO' to represent that it is the evolved form of Pidgey. Pidgey - a respelling of 'PIGEON'. Remoraid - a variation of 'REMORA', which is a fish that attaches itself onto other larger lifeforms. Rhydon - a combination of 'RHY', meaning 'nose', and 'DON' meaning 'object'. Shuckle - from 'SHUCK', meaning 'oyster shell'. Skarmory - a combination of 'SKY', as it's a flying-type, and 'ARMORY', as it's also a steel-type. Slowbro - a combination of 'SLOW', as it is a little slow in the mind, and 'BRO', a short from of 'brother', to idicate that it is the second evolution. Slowking - 'SLOW', as it is a little slow in the mind, and 'KING' as it is the final evolution. Slowpoke - a SLOWPOKE is someone who is always slow, whether physically or metally. Slugma - from 'SLUG', the gastropod that the Pokemon is based upon, and 'MAGMA', as it often lives within volcanoes. Sneasel - from 'SNEAKY' and 'WEASEL'. Smeargle - a combination of 'SMEAR', as it loves to paint, and 'BEAGLE'. Smoochum - 'SMOOCH' as it loves to kiss, and 'CHUM' meaning friend. Snorlax - a combination of 'SNORE' and 'LAX', meaning 'lazy'. Snubbull - a combination of 'SNUB', because of it's nose, and 'BULLDOG', the type of dog it is based upon. Spearow - from 'SPEAR', as it's bill is like a spear, and 'OW', from 'SPARROW', a common bird. Spinarak - From 'SPIN', as it spins webs, and 'ARACHNID', as it is a spider-type. Squirtle a combination of the words 'SQUIRT', as it is a water-type, and 'TURTLE', as it is based upon that animal. Stantler - 'ST' from 'STOMP', one of it's attacks, and 'ANTLER'. Starmie - a combination of 'STAR', as it's based upon the starfish, and 'ME'. Staryu - a combination of 'STAR', as it's based upon the starfish, and 'YOU'. Steelix - 'STEEL' as it's a Steel-type, and 'IX' as it's ONIX's evolved form. Sudowoodo - a combination of 'SUDO', a respelling of 'PSEUDO', meaning fake, and 'WOOD'. Therefore, Sudowoodo means 'Fake Wood', as it is actually a rock-type. Suikune - Origin unknown. Sunkern - from 'SUN', as it uses a Sun Stone to evolve, and 'KERNEL', as it's a seed. Sunflora - a respelling of 'SUNFLOWER', the flower this Pokemon resembles ('FLORA' is a word used for all types of plant). Vulpix - a combination of 'VULP', from 'VULPES', Latin for 'fox', and 'IX', as it has six tails.
Wartortle - a combination of 'WAR' and 'TURTLE' (spelt with an 'O' possibly to represent 'TORTOISE'). Weedle - possibly a combination of 'WEE', as it is small, and 'BEETLE', a type of insect, although Weedle doesn't really look like a beetle. Weepinbell - a combination of 'WEEPING', the name given to plants whose stems hang downward, and 'BELL', as it is shaped like a bell. Weezing - a respelling of 'WHEEZING', the noise made when someone finds it difficult to breath. Wigglytuff - a combination of 'WIGGLY', as it wiggles a lot, and 'TUFF', from 'TUFT' referring to the patch of hair on it's head. 'TUFF' may also relate to 'TOUGH', as it is quite a tough Pokemon.
