Toshihiro Ono's Manga
Ono's 'Pokemon' manga series was first released in
Japan in 1998.
He began work on it before the first season of the
TV show was shown on Japanese TV. To help him
learn about the world of Pokemon, he began to play one
of the games, but had to stop playing it because he
became so addicted to it that he was playing it when
he was supposed to be writing the manga.
The mangas come in two different forms - sixteen individual
issues (consisting of one or more stories), or four
Graphic Novels (approx. 160 pages each), each consisting
of four of the individual issues. Each Graphic
Novel includes several colour pages and pages detailing
the main character.
Although the characters look a little different because
of artistic license, they are really cool and give a
slightly different slant on the stories in the show.
For example, in the first issue, the power in Ash's
home back in Pallet Town has just cut out. He
finds the problem, a Pikachu chewing the electricity
cables. To stop it from doing anymore damage he
catches it and then heads out to set it loose in the
nearby forest. On his way out, he bumps into Gary,
who used to be his closest friend who has just gotten
his Pokémon license. Ash, determined to
beat Gary, wants to be a Pokémon trainer.
But it seems, at least until he begins training, that
this is the only reason he wants to be one, oh yeah,
and the fact that he has a crush on Gary's older sister
May and wants to prove to her he's not a kid anymore
(Ash gets pretty excited when she says that he's gotten
all grown up).
It's also a good deal more violent and there are several
physical fights between the human characters, and some
scenes with blood.
For Pokémon fans, it's a must read for all
ages.
The Author
Toshihiro Ono was born February 27, 1965 (making him
a Pisces) in Nagoya City, in Aichi Prefecture.
He has type A blood, and is single.
