Japanese Translations

General Translations

Japanese Title

Pokémon or, in full, Poketto Monsuta - Pocket Monsters.
To the left is 'Pokemon' in Japanese script.

Kawaii - Cute (one of the most used words to describe Pokémon, as the Japanese love anything cute).

Mechs or Mecha - any kind or machinery (like Team Rocket's weird inventions, the submarines, etc.  This is an Anime term).

Anime - Japanese animation, which generally has a different styling to Western cartoons. 'Pokemon' is Anime.

Manga - Japanese comics.  Anime is the animated version of this.  'Pokemon' has several Manga series', the main one by TOSHIHIRO ONO.

Pokemon Zukam - Dexter

Muskrat Meatballs were actually Dango, or Japanese sweet dumplings in the episode 'To Master the Onixpected.'

Main Characters

Satoshi (named after the shows creator, Satoshi Tajiri) - Ash (Satoshi means 'Enlightenment' in Japanese).

Kasumi Yawa  -  Misty (In Japanese 'kasumi' means 'mist' so Misty is really just the translation of Kasumi).

Takeshi  -  Brock(these kinda go as Takeshi means 'brave' or 'strong', which relates to rock, and therefore Brock).

Pikachu - 'Pika' means 'electric' and 'chu' means 'mouse', therefore Pikachu's an electric mouse

Kojiro  -  James (named after a famous Samurai).

Musashi  -  Jessie (named after Musashi Miyamoto, who some considered the greatest Japanese Samurai).

Nyarth  - Meowth (again this suits.  In Japan, 'Nyaa' means 'Meow', so both names are a joining of the word 'Meow' and 'Mouth').

Haruka - May

Japanese Parallels

Many of the towns, cities and islands in 'Pokémon' are actually based upon places in Japan.  I have added a list of these parallels between our world and the world of Pokémon. Indigo (the area where the main characters come from [click here for map]) is based upon the Kanto area of Japan (the lower easten area of Japan's main island).  In the Gold /Silver / Crystal version of the game Indigo is even referred to as Kanto.
