Character Profile
Professor
Oak is one of the best and most renowned Pokémon professors
on the planet. He has educated such authorities upon Pokémon
as Professor Spencer Hale ('The Spell of the Unown') and
Professor Elm. He spent his early life as a Pokémon
trainer and after he retired from this career he put his knowledge
to good use in helping to create the Pokédex, a comprehensive
encyclopedia for trainers to carry and record their progress on.
The professor uses his large plot of land as a ranch for Pallet
Town's trainers' Pokémon. It has a number of varied habitats
suited to all types of Pokémon.
At the beginning of the show, he felt that his grandson Gary was
one of the most promising trainers he had ever
seen, but worried if Ash would ever make it as a trainer.
Now that the tables have been turned, and Ash has become a more
successful trainer than Gary, he realizes he was wrong to have a
lack of faith in the young trainer. He is very concerned about
young Ash, sometimes more than he is about his own grandson (he
is glad that Gary lost the forth round in the Indigo League as he
believed that he needed to learn a little humility), probably as
Ash is the son of his close friend, Delia Ketchum, whom he has known
since she was just a school girl. Some people even believe
that he is Ash's father.
When Oak was
about thirteen years old, he journeyed through Johto. Travelling
through the Ilex Forest, he encountered a Pokémon hunter
attempting to capture a Celebi. Protecting the rare Pokémon,
it transported both him and itself forty years in the future. Here,
he met with Ash, Misty and Brock, fighting along side them to save
the Celebi. Sammy, as he was often nicknamed as a teenager, and
Ash almost instantly became friends, and had a hard time saying
farewell when Sammy had to return home to his time.
Oak has kept this fact secret ever since Ash was born, and even
hid the truth when Ash, Brock and Misty told him the story of a
boy from the past ('The Voice of the Forest').
