Character Profile
Misty comes from the beautiful city of Cerulean, where her family
runs the local gym. She is the youngest of four sisters, and
because of this, and her tomboy tendencies, is considered the runt
of the family by her older siblings. Her relationship with
her sisters is one of the best examples that you can love your family
without necessarily liking them. When she was younger, all
she had was her sisters old broken hand-me-downs and she dearly
prized anything that belonged only to her. When Misty competed
in the Princess festival battles, she won a set of rare, one-of-a-kind
Pokémon dolls. She took great joy in sending them home,
in hopes of making her sisters jealous ('Princess Vs Princess').
She left home in hopes to prove to her sisters that she
was just as good as they were, and probably even better. She
vowed that she would not return home until she had proved herself.
A while after leaving home, she did travel back home, but not by
choice ('The Waterflowers of Cerulean
City'). Ash was hoping to win a Cascade badge at the
local gym, unaware that it was run by Misty's family. She
disappeared for a short while, but when her sisters told Ash that
they had decided to give up Pokémon battling and that they
would give him the badge anyway, Misty showed up.
She told her sisters that if they were not willing to fight him,
she would use her right as the forth sensational sister to fight
him. She wanted Ash to earn his badges, not simply be given
them. So the two fought, but Team Rocket intervened when they
we both one up. They both believe that they would have won
the match if not for the interruption. Although Misty proved
how skilled a Pokémon trainer she was to her sisters, they
still tease her, as they view her as the baby.
Misty has problems
with two of her Pokémon. Togepi, who is still a baby,
generally gets itself in trouble, leaving everyone else, especially
Pikachu, to save it. She also has a Psyduck, which isn't the
most intelligent Pokémon you've ever seen. It is only
useful in a fight when it gets an intense headache. Sadly
it's usually Misty who gets the headache first.
Misty loves anything romantic, and views herself as a
kind of matchmaker ('Wherefore Art Thou, Pokémon').
She also loves older men, especially the mature and intellectual
type (e.g. Danny from 'Naval Maneuvers' or Rudy from 'Misty
Meets Her Match'), and gives this as a reason why she would
never be interested in Ash as he is younger than her and she still
considers him a kid. But we can see that she does care deeply
for Ash, helping to guide him, and even though she teases him and
is pretty hard on him, this is because she wants to make sure he
never gives up his dream, but also keeps a check on reality.
Go to the Pokeshipping
page to find evidence of Misty's feelings for Ash. She is also really
close to Brock, Tracey and Sakura, a girl Misty shares a great deal
in common with and who almost joined the group ('A Storm Brewing').
Recently, Misty competed in the 'Whirlpool Cup.' Here, she defeated
Ash, her best friend, but then was beaten in her next match ('The
Perfect Match').
After Misty, Ash and Brock return to Kanto from Johto, she receives
a call from her sisters, telling her that they have won a year long
around-the-world trip and that Misty is obligated to run the gym
for that year. She leaves those that she has travelled with over
the past few years, giving Ash a handkerchief as a farewell present,
and as a hint to the feelings she has for him ('Goodbye...Farewell
And, Setting Off!').
Misty has appeared in several of the special side-story episodes
(see Advance Generation
Side Story episode list). When she returns home to run the Cerulean
City gym, it is in the process of being shut due to the fact it
has been left without a leader for some time. To prevent this, Misty
first has to prove that she is good enough to be its leader and
tame a vicious Gyarados ('Hanada JIMU no RIBENJI MATCHI!').
Misty has also had adventures with Sakura, Tracey and Casey and
fought against Cassidy and Butch during her time back in her hometown.
Now that her sisters have returned ('Kasumi Shinken Shoubu!
Mei Kakemasu!?'), Misty's obligation to run the gym has expired.
Initally unsure what to do, she decides to travel to the Hoenn Region
and meet up with her old friends, Ash and Brock. With a new outfit,
she joins them for a short time. However, after Togepi evolves and
leaves her, Misty decides to set out on her own journey ('Kasumi
Toujou! Togepii to Maboroshi no Oukoku!').
Misty is a
very confidant trainer, and has the skills to prove her right.
She is compassionate, very mature for her young age and quite stubborn,
but not as stubborn as Ash. She's also a bit of a tomboy,
preferring the company of Ash and Brock rather than female friends,
but still she loves clothes, shopping and anything cute. She never
allows other people's comments to depress her, instead using them
as fuel for her ambitions.
However, she does tend to hide some of her more tender emotions,
never really wishing to appear too weak infront of others. But she
does let this facade down sometimes. For instance, she once cried
when she believed that Ash had died ('The Tower of Terror')
and was visibly upset when her idol turned out to not be as perfect
as she believed.
