Character Profile
James is the male half of the Team Rocket that we all know and
love, and probably is the funniest of all the main characters.
He is also sweet and loyal to his friends, and doesn't exactly seem
like the criminal type. He is very extravagant, and always
has a rose on hand. He can be a bit of a scarredy-cat, often
relying upon his stronger team mate, Jessie.
He comes from one of the richest families in the Kanto region,
however, even though he had all the luxuries in life that anyone
could wish for, he was never truly happy. He grew up to hate
upper class society as they had rules for everything possible and
he never felt independent. Additionally, at about the age
of eight or nine he became betrothed to a girl named Jessiebell.
She was a pillar of upper class rules and regulations, and his parents
hoped that she would turn him from a delinquent son to a perfect
gentleman.
To
try and escape from this lifestyle, James ran away from home and
joined a bicycle gang of Team Rocket wannabies. He was known
as Little Jim by his friends and was one of the most notorious members
of the gang, despite the fact he needed training wheels on his bike.
It may have been here that he met his now Team Rocket partner, Jessie
(at the time of the second movie, 'The Power of One' [Japanese
version], Jessie and James say that the two of them have been friends
for almost ten years meaning they must have met when they were around
nine or ten). The two also went to, and flunked out of, Pokémon
Tech together, (although we are not sure whether this was before
or when they were in the biker gang). When the two were old enough,
they both joined Team Rocket.
In the episode 'Holy Matrimony' James
was lured back to his family home by the news that his parents had
died, but this was only a plan to get him to marry his fiancée,
Jessiebell. The agreement is that if James marries her, he
will get his inheritance. Because of this, Jessie and Meowth
tried to force James into the marriage, planning to split with the
money after, but Jessiebell chased the two away from the estate.
With a little help from Ash and co., James was able to escape again
from Jessiebell and his parents. In the end, James decided
that even with the amount of money he could get, he valued his independence
and his friends more than money.
James is a lot smarter than he seems, it's just that he doesn't
have that much common sense. He also seems to have a lack
of self-confidence. When he finds
a Pokémon fortune telling book (which has been badly copied
by Butch and Cassidy from the original version), which matches trainer's
birthdays with Pokémon, he discovers that the mighty Moltres
belongs to his birthday. He instantly gains a great deal of
confidence, dressing up in a Moltres costume, and almost beats Butch
and Cassidy single-handedly, even putting his Victreebel in line,
but when he discovers that the book is a fake, he loses this new
found confidence, leading him and his partners to another defeat
('The Fortune Tellers').
At the beginning of the show, James, Jessie and Meowth were notorious
members of Team Rocket, and had Viridian City in a total panic,
but since they met Ash-tachi, they haven't had much luck in their
primary mission (namely to kidnap, or pokénap, Pikachu),
and have come close to being fired (or worse).
Several times, James and his friends have sided with good.
For instance, they have helped the Twerp Trio defeat their fellow
Team Rocket members Butch and Cassidy, and have aided them in all
of the movies.
Character Info
'Kojirou' means 'second son.' James is named after the famous samurai,
