Character Profile
Gary is very egotistical, believing that he is the best Pokémon
trainer. At first, he was considered the best Pokémon
trainer to come out of Pallet Town that year, and Ash the worst.
He and the other two trainers kept quite a bit ahead of Ash for
the first while. He got ten badges in the same time as Ash
earned seven.
He used to think of Ash as a loser (despite their childhood friendship
and the closeness of their families), bullying him everytime they
ran into each other. However, Gary is put out of the Pokémon
League after winning three matches, whereas Ash beats him with four
wins.
Gary used to be followed around by six cheerleaders, who seem
to have more beauty than brains. They have supposedly been
supplied by his uncle, Pallet Town's Mayor.
We first see the positive side of Gary's personality in 'The
Battle of the Badge'. Here he stops Team Rocket from
cheating in their match with Ash. He also comments that Ash
isn't that bad a trainer. Sadly the next time we see him,
he's back to his annoying self.
Gary and Ash
have only ever had one battle, an instant knock-out battle between
his Eevee and Ash's Pikachu, which Gary won ('The Rivalry Revival').
At this time Gary seems to have matured a lot since the Indigo League.
While Ash was taking part in the Orange League, Gary spend his time
at home honing his talents. His cheering squad have gone,
he is much less egotistical and patronizing, and has taken to wearing
a brown cloak.
After defeating his rival, Gary leaves to compete in the Johto
League. The last two times he was seen were when he helped
Ash defeat Team Rocket ('Power Play!') and competed against
his old rival in a Pokémon skateboarding contest. They seem
to have put there differences aside and are working to salvage their
once close friendship.
