Character Profile
Delia may often
seem a little odd to most people. She is very 'happy' and
rarely worries about anything. The only thing she does seem
to worry about is her son, and can often be overprotective of him,
but she never stands in the way of his dreams. She feels that
he is her whole world, and that if something ever happened to him,
she would lose the one thing precious in her life ('The Power
of One'). She enjoys the times when Ash and his friends
come to stay in Pallet Town, as after Ash left (at least until Mimie
came along) she lived alone. She even willingly took Brock,
one of her son's closest friends, in when he was down in his luck
('A Tent Situation'). On her living room wall she
proudly displays a picture of Ash, Misty, Brock, Pikachu, Oak and
herself as a reminder of those she is closest too.
Little is known of Delia Ketchum's past.
As a teenager, a little before she had Ash, Delia was close to Spencer
Hale, a young man studying to become a Pokémon Professor
under the tutelage of Professor Samuel Oak. The two remain
friends up to this day and have visited each other a number
of times, for instance one time when Hale, his wife and daughter,
Molly, visited Pallet Town when Ash was about seven. The two
families also were drawn together again when Hale and his wife disappeared,
leaving their young daughter alone. Molly wished to have her
parents back, and Entei, the Unown's representation of Spencer,
brought Delia as a substitute mother.
Entei brainwashed her, but when she saw Ash on the television,
she broke out of this hypnosis. Ash and his friends entered
Molly's home, which was now covered in a crystalline structure,
and were able to reach Delia, but Molly refused to let her leave.
Entei began to battle Ash's Charizard, while Delia tried to convince
Molly to give up her imaginary world. Just as Entei prepared
to unleash his final attack upon Charizard, Molly told him to stop.
Delia was able to talk the little girl into leaving the crystal
tower, possibly saving everyone's lives ('The Spell of the Unown').
Delia shares a close friendship with Oak. The two are rarely
seen apart, and this has lead to speculation that the two may harbour
feelings for each other, despite the fact that Delia is younger
than Oak's children, and her son and his grandson are the same age.
Little is known of Delia's one time suitor, the father of her only
child. In a novel released in Japan, it tells of how a teenage Hanako
fell for a young travelling Pokémon trainer. After
a short while together, she found out that she was pregnant with
Ash. This man didn't feel ready to settle down, and left either
just before or just after Ash's birth, and possibly even had an
affair. The two may have or may not have been married.
This novel, however, may not officially share the same background
as the Anime.
Character Info
