PROFILE - In middle school, Tonami was an overweight, spoiled rich kid who was constantly bullied by his classmates.

He went to the same middle school with Tsubaki, Tsubasa, Aya and Rika. Tsubaki was assigned by one of their teachers to protect him, without Tonami's knowledge. Despite that fact she treated him like a slave, Tonami had believed she protected him as she felt he was special, and was heartbroken to find out the truth.

When his family moved three years ago to Okinawa, Tonami was committed to improving himself. He worked incredibly hard to become the type of man Tsubaki would love; tall, athletic and smart. His plan for revenge was to make her fall for him and then reject her, as he feels she rejected him all those years ago.

When he came back to his hometown and enrolled in Hokuei, he quickly shows off his new athletic prowess, and proves himself to be as intelligent as Arima and Yukino, drawing number one in the year with them. Tsubaki doesn't, at first, realise who he is. Tonami begins his plan for vengeance, but eventually realises his anger for her is so strong due to the fact he actually loves her. When Tsubaki realises she shares these feelings, the two become a couple.

Tonami and Yukino also become close friends. They feel connected, as they have both had to hide their true personalities for such a long time. Arima feels threatened by this friendship, and at first believes that Tonami is after Yukino's heart. But, in truth, Tonami sees Arima as his idol.
