PROFILE - Asaba is one of the most popular boys in school and Arima's
best friend. Caring more about girls, body-boarding and getting a sun tan
than anything else, many wonder how he got into Hokuei Prefectural High
School.
Initially, Asaba and Yukino did not get along. Asaba saw her as a threat
to his plans; to use Arima, the only other boy in school who could match
Asaba's looks, to create the 'Asaba Merry-Land.' However, after Arima confronted
him, Asaba gave up his dream and lost his reason to hate Yukino. Even, when
Arima was late for his first date with Yukino, Asaba stayed with her until
her boyfriend showed up, and then proceeded to hold him over a wall until
he apologized.
Since then, he, Arima and Yukino have become inseparable. He feels really
close to them, and when he discovers that they have slept together, he is
hurt that he didn't get to share their secret.
Despite Asaba's obsession with the opposite sex, he also seems to have some
kind of attraction to Arima. He is very affectionate with him, and often
jokes to Yukino about sleeping with Arima. When Arima leaves for the Kendo
tournament, he becomes very depressed, saying he doesn't feel like eating
and dreams of his best friend at night.
Asaba doesn't get along with his family. When his father was transferred,
he decided to study hard so he could go to Hokuei and not leave with his
family. Asaba feels his father is a very serious person and does not have
shred of human kindness. Despite their relation, he hates his father and
the two can't be in the same room for very long without fighting. His mother
seems very weak willed and just goes along with whatever Asaba's father
says. Therefore, he lives by himself. His parents still pay for his education,
so he feels it doesn't really account for being alone. Asaba feels Arima
is similar to his father due to his seriousness, meaning that their friendship
has helped him work through some of his father issues.
Asaba is a talented artist. When Yukino and her friends wish to do a play
for the Culture Fest, Asaba helps them, and creates the sets. At the same
time he has his own narcissistic project for the festival.
