PROFILE -
Arima seems to be strong and unflappable from the outside and has an amiable personality, but, in truth, he is sensitive and has a somewhat dark, almost violent, aspect to his personality. He is very possessive of Yukino, and often questions what she sees in him. When another guy seems to be close to her (such as in the case of Tonami), he becomes fiercely jealous.

As a child, he was abused and abandoned by his parents. Even though he was adopted by his father's oldest brother and his wife, and brought up in a loving environment, his past still deeply troubles him. This isn't helped by the fact that rest of his family believe that one day he will end up like his father, Reji, the black sheep of the Arima's. They would rather he have been adopted by another family so they could eradicate the blemish in its entirety.

In middle school, Arima only truly had one friend; Tsubasa. The two seem to have been drawn to each other due to their family situations. He was also the only person to treat Tonami with respect, something that Tonami still remembers years later, and could easily stop the other kids from bullying him.

Arima meets Yukino when he becomes a freshman at Hokeui High. When he came top in his class in the entrance exams, he unwittingly made an enemy of her. This was far from his intention.

As Arima spent more time with his classmate, often helping her with clean up duty or running into her as they both were always early for school, he began to fall for this model student. This realisation came to him one day while waiting under the cherry blossom trees near to the high school. He had received a love letter (a common occurrence), asking him to meet the sender there. When he mistook Yukino for her, the emotions he felt due to the mix-up cleared his perception of his emotions.

Soon after, Arima plucked up the courage to admit his feelings, however, Yukino turned him down. Hurt, he still wishes to be her friend. While bringing her a CD to borrow, he accidentally discovers Yukino's true self. With this privileged information, he is able to blackmail her into doing work for him. However, his real intention isn't to get off from working. This deception is simply a way for him to spend more time with her. When she discovers the truth, the two truly become friends and open up to one another.

However, Arima's childhood traumas temporally become a barrier to them growing closer. When Arima sees how the happy Miyasawa family interacts, it brings his painful memories to the forefront. He distances himself from Yukino and becomes consumed by his depression. After a while, he is able to tell her of his past, as well as his deep worries that he may someday become like his parents. To prevent such a thing from happening, he has worn a façade all his life, always striving to be the best, the model student, to do anything that will make his parents happy. When Yukino tells him that she wants to find out who the real Arima is, he is able to start deconstructing his pseudo-self, and is able to accept himself a little more.

As the two students grow closer, Arima tells Yukino that he loves her for a second time. When she hesitates and doesn't respond he feels a betrayed and anxious, but gives her time to do so. When she takes his hand within hers one day in class, Arima is able to see that love that she has for him.

Arima initially is shocked by the strong desire he has to kiss Yukino, feeling that the intense emotion is somehow wrong, but after they share their first kiss, his mind is set at ease. When their second kiss occurs, Arima is much more confident, and it becomes much more intimate than the previous one.

After a long while of dating (after they have broken through barriers such as being separated during the Sports Fest and when their teachers tried to break them up), everything seems to be going well for the two. Their next big problem comes when summer vacation begins and Arima has to leave for number weeks to compete in the Kendo nationals (which he wins). During their separation, they talk to one another constantly over the phone.

This period is one of the most important for Arima. He not only grows several inches, but comes back much more mature. He is disturbed by new sexual feelings he has for Yukino. Unconsciously makes more bold moves upon her, he panics, however, she takes it in her stride, and the couple sleeps together for the first time.

Once again this experience affects him deeply. It seems the happier Arima becomes, the more his inner problems surface.

Arima will probably never overcome his troubles. They have effected him so deeply that he has little confidence. But thanks to his great friends, and the enduring support of Yukino, he will hopefully be able to get as far pass them as possible and realise his dreams.
