Malaysian illustrator Toonikun’s pieces have a real decadent quality to them; less isn’t always more and the intricate detailing and patterning on these prove that fact. In addition, the colour depth helps the illustrations jump off the page, even in the case of the more monotone works.

Hikari Shimoda

Hikari Shimoda was born in Nagano, Japan in 1984 and studied at the Kyoto Saga University of Art. With children as a motif she, as she explains in her own words, “pick(s) up their warped attitude or feeling toward the outer world and express(es) it through their physical body which has not been balanced yet. Through their unstable presence, I can express deep feelings I have inside, such as grief, alienation, and love.”

Ryuichi Ogino

Ryuichi Ogino was born in Tokyo in 1978. He grew up surrounded by Japan’s pop culture (anime / manga such as Gundam and Nausicaa, video games like Final Fantasy series, and all kinds of related merchandises, as well as; mostly imported from the US, fashion and music). Most notably, snowboarding, a trend well packaged and marketed as an alternative lifestyle, made a huge impact on Ogino, that it became his primary reason to go study in Colorado after finishing high-school in Japan.

Belfast-based (therefore a neighbour to myself, Akaihane) anime-inspired artist Anarkitty describes her own art as “Lowbrow, candy coated corruption”. I first saw her works in all their glory in a local gallery while walking to the vets.
