UK-born but now based in Japan, Japanese-British artist Gez Fry applies both hand-drawn and computer-generated techniques to his anime-inspired style. The influence of several big manga artists, such as Masamune Shirow (of ‘Ghost in the Shell’ fame) can be seen in his work, as well as those from traditional Japanese art periods such as Ukiyo-e. His great talents have not only helped him gain a following, but has landed him work with the likes of BBC, Namco, Industrial Light and Magic and Future Publishing.

The soft, limited palette combined with the medium of acrylic on wood lends her paintings a beautiful endearing texture and depth.

Born and raised in Toba, Japan, Yoskay Yamamoto moved to the United States at the age of 15. A self-trained illustrator, Yamamoto’s artistic tastes expanded as he fell in love with the urban culture of the West coast. Yamamoto discovered a way to fuse the two different cultural backgrounds together into his work. Yamamoto nostalgically blends pop iconic characters from his new Western home with traditional and mythical Japanese elements, balancing his Asian heritage with urban pop art (taken from the artists CV)

Taiyo Matsumoto is one of Japan’s foremost seinen mangakas. His works are a combination of European, American and Japanese comic art forms, making his work purely unique, with a captivating franetic energy.

Several of his works have been published in English, from his most famous work in the west, Tekkonkinkreet: Black & White (which has been adapted into an anime movie), to the recently released Go Go Monster. His works Ping Pong and Aoi Haru (Blue Spring) have been made into live-action features.

Malaysian illustrator Toonikun’s pieces have a real decadent quality to them; less isn’t always more and the intricate detailing and patterning on these prove that fact. In addition, the colour depth helps the illustrations jump off the page, even in the case of the more monotone works.
