It’s easy to see why ‘Eden of the East’, the new anime from Kenji ‘Ghost in the Shell: SAC’ Kamiyama is already the darling of the new anime season in Japan. Unusual for a futuristic spy thriller, Chica Umino, most famous for her award-winning josei manga ‘Honey and Clover’, gives the character designs a quirky adorableness, that somehow blend immaculately with Production I.G.’s outstanding and realistic animation. Add to that probably the most memorable ending sequence for many years, utilizing paper cutouts, this anime is not only an amazing ride, but goes to show that there is still immense creative output coming from modern Japanese animation studios, and that it is an industry we can all learn from.
