Jonathan Ross, you are cool. Japanorama is cool. Okay, sending a guy who can’t pronounce his ‘r’s to Japan is maybe a little unfortunate (as in last week, the complete confusion there for a moment with Demon Kogure), but none-the-less you are probably the most famous otaku in the UK (and it is always fun to hear you pronounce Japanese so badly).
But please, please, please don’t perpetuate the stereotype that geisha are prostitutes. Oiran are not high-class geisha. They are high-class prostitutes and are not related to the geisha. We already had uninformed information about the geisha in the West (such as the whole virginity thing in ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’). Geisha were artisans, oiran courtesans. Though it was great to see a bit of Sakuran somewhere other than the net and the interview with Anna Tsuchiya.
