Seven Seals

Subaru has never really felt comfortable with the other Seals. He keeps himself at a distance, not willing to let himself become close to anyone other than Kamui. Regardless, the others do care for him and there have been moments when he has had a fleeting connection to them.

While in Shinjuku Hospital recovering from the injury to his right eye, Sorata and Arashi pay Subaru a visit. Subaru has been worrying about the state Kamui is in (the boy hasn't left Subaru side since the incident where he lost his eye) and the blame their leader is putting upon himself. Without needing to ask, Sorata knows that Subaru wants to talk with him alone. Subaru, trusting Sorata, wants him to take Kamui home and to try to convince him the injury wasn't Kamui's fault.

Subaru and Sorata both worry about Kamui in the same way, as if he was their younger brother, and in this they have a connection with each other.

Shortly after his brief talk with Sorata, the youngest of the Seals, Yuzuriha, comes to visit Subaru at the hospital. Apologizing for not making it to Ikebukuro in time to help in the battle with 'Kamui', Dragon of Earth, she asks Subaru to call on her and Inuki if anything happens again. She also tells Subaru that he is a very kind person and that he and Kamui are alike in personality. After spending some time with him, she leaves a cuddly rabbit toy with him so he isn't alone. He seems to have enjoyed her company; perhaps Yuzu-chan reminds him somewhat of his dear sister.

Perhaps if Subaru hadn't endured so many years of hardship in the run-up to 1999, he would have been able to make more of a connection with his comrades.

 

'Kamui', Dragon of Earth

Subaru and 'Kamui', Dragon of Earth, seem to have an unusual interaction with one another, based upon their relationships with the others' opposite: Subaru's kindredship with Kamui and 'Kamui's "friendship" with the Sakurazukamori.

Subaru's first encounter with 'Kamui' was when the Onmyoji entered a battle between him and Kamui, Dragon of Heaven. After Nataku's failed attempts to stop Subaru, 'Kamui', Dragon of Earth, restrained his opposite and went after the Onmyoji himself.

As 'Kamui' has the power to see into a person's heart and read their wishes, 'Kamui' could tell that Subaru had a wish to see Seishirou, the man he still loved, again. By making himself appear in Subaru's mind as the Sakurazukamori, Subaru's concentration wavers and 'Kamui' is able to severely beat him, in what is a close parallel to what happen to Subaru eight years before in the Sakurazukamori's maraboshi. Shocked, Subaru can do nothing as 'Kamui' destroys his right eye.

The two are not thrown together again until after Seishirou's death. While Subaru stands in the garden of the house owned by the Sakurazuka clan, 'Kamui' approaches him. Apparently Seishirou's wish was to heal Subaru of any scar he himself did not put on his body, and to make this come true, 'Kamui' has brought Subaru Seishirou's left eye to replace his blind one. He also informs the Onmyoji that he is now a Dragon of Earth.

Despite this fact, and Subaru's acceptance of the eye, 'Kamui' does not force Subaru when the Onmyoji refuses to play a part in the Angels' plans. However, Subaru does use 'Kamui' to find out more about Kamui's true wish.

 

Guardian

After the death of Subaru and Hokuto's parents, the then Head of the Sumeragi Clan, the twin’s grandmother, became their guardian. A strict matriarch, it was not only her task to test whether either of the twins had enough spiritual power to inherit her title; she would need to educate and guide her potential heir. The woman has an incredible strength and resilience; Hokuto once joked that she must be some sort of goblin as she hadn't aged a day since the twins' birth.

Although she dearly loved her grandchildren, her position and class often meant she could not show them the affection she held, something which caused a degree of resentment in her granddaughter.

It was when she left Subaru alone in Tokyo that he was marked as the prey of the Sakurazukamori. This has wrought a deep seated guilt within the woman, and since then she has tried her best to help her grandson by removing the task of organizing new jobs. She was also the one to order him to always wear his enchanted gloves; she prayed this would keep Subaru safe from the Sakurazukamori.

Years later, while performing a fire ceremony to tell Subaru's fortune, Lady Sumeragi heard a terrifying prophecy: that the sakura were trying to steal Subaru away. Knowing this must be tied to the Sakurazukamori, she broke down in front of Subaru, begging him to be careful. This is probably one of only two times she has appeared fragile in front of her grandson; the second was after news of Hokuto's murder reached them.

"Do not let the cherry blossoms seduce you, Subaru-san. Never. Never allow them to confuse your mind and heart.

When Lady Sumeragi sensed that Subaru had been trapped within the maraboshi of the Sakurazukamori, she used as much power as possible to shatter the illusion and save her grandson. However, the strength of the spell was too powerful even for her; she has been constrained to a wheelchair for the rest of her life. While Subaru lay in catatonia and the rest of the family searched for the missing Hokuto, she stayed by Subaru's side, hoping that one day he would awaken from his trance.

In 1999, despite the pain she feels for her grandson, she never attempts to stop him from searching for the Sakurazukamori; she feels it's his place, as head of the clan, to decide what path to follow. However, she most likely thinks that Subaru is out for revenge against the man you killed her granddaughter. She is pained by the fact that her grandson has once again been placed in a position where his tender heart may be hurt further.
